Portuguese Translators Describe Conviction of Paramilitary Leader
In Rio de Janeiro, a head of a paramilitary group and former policeman was found guilty of turturing and robbing journalists and their driver. According to a Brazilian Portuguese Translation service, the journalists were investigating Odinei Fernandes da Silva, the leader of the paramilitary group, when they were seized, attacked, robbed and tortured for several days. Da Silva was sentenced to thirty – one years in prison for his role in ordering the crimes. For years, the leader had brutalized the inhabitants of Rio’s many slum neighborhoods as police casually stood by. For this reason, the court’s decision is considered by many Brazilians to be historic.
